DECEMBER

Dec 19 Winter Solstice Community Ritual Theatre

Spiritual Cinema Nights 2009-2010

1) November 6th: Agnes of God (1985).
Length: 98 min. Rating: PG-13.

Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft, and Meg Tilly star in this emotionally and spiritually charged suspense film, masterly directed by Norman Jewison. An isolated convent in the French speaking part of Canada becomes the setting for crime in this riveting film about spiritual passion and pride, skepticism and faith, that was nominated for 3 Academy Awards. When an infant is found strangled in the convent, a court-appointed psychiatrist, Martha Livingston (Fonda), must decide if Agnes (Tilly) is likely the guilty party, and if so is she fit to stand trial. In her quest for truth, Martha goes head-to-head with the Mother Superior (Bancroft), who assures her that Agnes has no memory of the pregnancy. The investigation, however, uncovers mysterious aspects of Agnes’ background and personality, which lead to a surprising climax. Is Agnes a hysterical young woman--or is her ordeal divinely inspired? This movie is definitely for adults.

2) December 4th: A Film about Jimi Hendrix (1973).
Length: 103 min. Rating R.

This definitive documentary was the first authorized effort to detail Hendrix’s celebrated life and career. Hendrix’s family and close friends are joined by such rock legends as Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend and Little Richard, each presenting their own memories of the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Filled with partial and complete clips of his electrifying performances, we are showing this movie in honor of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. Feel free to wear tie-dyed clothes and bring groovy vibes! This movie is rated R for adult content, such as drug references and swearing. Bring young people at your discretion.

3) January 1st: Living Yoga: The Life and Teachings of Swami Satchidananda (2008).
Length: 62 min. Rating: Unrated.

Swami Satchidananda was one of the first Yoga masters to bring the classical yoga tradition to the West (in 1967), and this documentary film is about the birth of the modern Yoga movement and its impact on the Western world. The role of spirituality in wellness and the link between inner and outer peace is explored, with commentaries by: Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Peter Max, Larry King, Rev. James P. Morton, Br. David Steindl-Rast and others. This film informs, entertains, and is filled with archival footage. Suitable for all ages, especially adults and teenagers.

4) February 5th: Matter of Heart: The Extraordinary Journey of C.G. Jung into the Soul
of Man (1985).
Length: 107 min. Rating: Unrated.

This is a compelling film portrait of C.G. Jung, a man whose genius and humanity reached far beyond the sometimes exclusive realm of psychiatry into redefining the essential nature of who we are and what we hope to become. This documentary presents a wide perspective on this analyst, healer, mentor and friend , through the interweaving of archival footage, home movies and interviews with well known figures such as Marie-Louise von Franz, Joseph Henderson, M.D., and Sir Laurens van der Post. The film awakens an awareness of the soul, the collective unconscious and archetypes, and our infinite human potential. Suitable for all ages, but will most likely interest adults.

5) March 5th: ARTmind: The Healing Power of Sacred Art, with Alex Grey (2004).
Length: 79 min. Rating: Unrated.

Alex Grey has been acclaimed by critics, spiritual leaders and art lovers from around the world to be one of the leading visionary artists of our age. The New York Times says that: “Grey’s vision of a flawed but perfectible mankind stands as an antidote to the cynicism and spiritual malaise prevalent in much contemporary art.” During the course of this video, which includes scores of his paintings and sculptures, he discusses the power of sacred art to bring us face to face with Divinity. After describing the life experiences, spiritual teachings, and painters that have inspired his own artistic vision, he takes the viewer on a whirlwind tour of the sacred art of various spiritual traditions, demonstrating how these works can be used revitalize one’s health and heal the soul. Parental alert: The film includes an extended discussion about the relationship between psychedelics and visionary art.

6) April 2nd: Cinema Paradiso, The New Version (1989).
Length: 174 min. Rating: R.

This feature film was specially requested by Tony and Grael Corsini (both of Italian background!), and is about a famous Italian filmmaker who, haunted by the memories of his first love, returns to his hometown after an absence of 30 years. Upon his return he reconnects with the community, and remembers the highlights and tragedies that shaped his life and art, and inspired him to follow his dream of becoming a filmmaker. This film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1989, and remains, quite simply and with no exaggeration, a classic. There is something for everyone: romance, comedy, drama, and even history. We will be showing the new, extended version, that includes 51 minutes of never-before-seen footage. There are a few scenes of violence and sex, so parental discretion for children under 17 is advised.

BETH BEURKEN'S WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Soul Retrieval:
 Return to Power & Wholeness
•part one of a two-part weekend series•
with Beth Beurkens, M.A. (Mt. Shasta, California)

Saturday, April 24, 10:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M.
Sunday, April 25,  9:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Course Description: Soul Retrieval is an ancient shamanic healing practice. The shaman retrieves and returns lost parts of a person’s soul to the them for healing and empowerment.

Participants will be trained in how soul loss occurs, how to track and find the lost soul, retrieve it shamanically and return this lost essence to the individual. According to shamanic traditions, partial soul loss can occur during times of emotional or physical trauma. An accident or surgery, abuse or other violent circumstance such as war or a natural disaster, death of a loved one, or even a divorce may result in the separation of oneself from a piece of their soul. This loss can result in depression, illness, post-traumatic stress syndrome, addictions, dissociation or coma.

Soul loss can keep us from feeling our connections with others, prevent us from creating healthy relationships, and from living the life we really want to live.
This weekend workshop focuses on the methods of soul retrieval – the techniques and practices regarding soul tracking and retrieval. Participants will be trained in how to work with the issues of soul loss from a shamanic perspective:
recognizing the need for soul retrieval
methods of the diagnostic journey
exploring causes of soul loss
healing soul loss

This workshop constitutes the prerequisite for the second part of the series; Shaman’s Heartbeat: Life After Soul Retrieval, the practices of how we create healthier lives and make more beneficial choices for ourselves and others after the healing has occurred.

These two workshops must be taken together as this training is specifically designed for those who wish to deepen their shamanic work with others. These workshops are designed for those who may want to bring shamanic healing work into their practice with others. Although everyone will receive a soul retrieval during the training, it is not designed for people seeking personal healing.
Prerequisites: All participants must have taken the Way of the Shaman: The Shamanic Journey, Power and Healing or similar introduction to the shamanic journey. In order to register for this course, you must have good shamanic journey skills and success in contacting your power animals and spirit teachers in nonordinary reality. Please make sure you feel confident about your shamanic journey skills before applying for this workshop.

Shaman’s Heartbeat:
 Life After Soul Retrieval
•part two of a two-part weekend series•
with Beth Beurkens, M.A. (Mt. Shasta, California)

Saturday, May 29, 10:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M.
Sunday, May 30,  9:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Course Description: After soul retrieval, life changes. For some, that change may be major and immediately evident. For others, as the new essence enters into one’s present life, the effect may be more subtle. Integration work helps complete the assimilation of the retrieved soul, ensuring the success of the soul retrieval itself.
The integration work involves vital shamanic journeys, rituals, and ceremonies. These practices help to restore wholeness and “set the cure” of the retrieval itself.
The return of a soul can bring joy and enthusiasm back into life, break unwholesome habits and patterns, reveal new choices and restore a feeling of well-being.
As you dance with your returned soul essence in this weekend workshop, you will have time to explore the inspiring, magical ways that integration manifests in your being.
You will also gain a solid foundation for working with clients in their soul retrieval process. Some of these themes include:
— preparing a client for soul retrieval
— performing long-distance soul retrievals
— using healing words (word doctoring)
— integration techniques for returned soul essences
— moving forward and creating a positive, balanced future for life
The workshop also includes some ceremonial time outside on the mountain of Mount Shasta.
This workshop constitutes the second part of the series; Shaman’s Heartbeat: Life After Soul Retrieval, the practices of how we create healthier lives and make more beneficial choices for ourselves and others after the healing has occurred.

These two workshops must be taken together as this training is specifically designed for those who wish to deepen their shamanic work with others.
